The Brief:

the Life and Pensions Services division within a leading insurance company were moving to Self-Managed Team working.
We undertook the design and development of a training programme to support this move.
Produced related training materials and delivered a series of face-to-face workshops.

Our Action

The programme was designed to balance the unique business and development needs of each Self-Managed Team.
Plus balance the requirement to develop common approaches across each department in line with the business strategy.

We achieved this balance by:

  • Each Workshop used live data, issues and situations pertinent to each team
  • Building delegates’ learning and acquisition of new skills around the resolution of these situations
  • Providing individual and team coaching
    • As they completed team specific tasks related
      • Directly to planning,
      • Managing change,
      • Improving team performance,
      • Handling conflict,
      • Building effective team working
      • Monitoring results
  • Constructing an action plan and a skills development agenda
    • to ensure ownership of continuing development
  • Active involvement and participation of line managers at each step
    • To ensure alignment with the Human Resources Strategy
    • As well as the direction and priorities of the local business area
  • Providing coaching and mentoring for newly appointed coaches
    • to ensure that the necessary support was available to teams
    • And as a follow-on beyond the completion of the formal workshops

The Results


  • Over 500 staff and managers were trained and supported
  •  78% teams reported significant improvements
    •  in individual and team productivity, quality and job satisfaction.
